Distance measurement

Whether you have PitPat Activity Monitor, or a PitPat GPS Tracker, the PitPat app can tell you how far your dog has travelled each day (or on each separate walk, if your dog is in PitPat LIFE™). But how does it do it?

Every PitPat has an "accelerometer" embedded in it. This clever device measures your dog's movements in three dimensions and, amongst other things, uses that to detect your dog's steps. By counting how many steps your dog takes, and by knowing how long your dog's stride is (how far they go with each step), we can calculate how far your dog has travelled (by simply multiplying the two together).

We estimate your dog's stride length based on knowing their breed, but if you feel that the distance estimate is not accurate, you can adjust the "stride length" used in the calculation. Just scroll down on the Activity Day View until you see the Tune distance estimate button. Easy!
